What it is

BBL is light rather than laser — a broad spectrum filtered so it is absorbed specifically by brown pigment and by the haemoglobin in visible vessels.

Because it targets colour rather than removing tissue, there is no real downtime. Brown spots darken like coffee grounds for three to five days and then flake away. Redness fades more gradually.

It is the best-value treatment on the menu for anyone whose main complaint is sun spots or a flushed, ruddy tone.

Good candidate

  • Sun spots and freckling
  • Facial redness or rosacea
  • Ruddy chest and shoulders
  • Want results with no downtime

Not yet / not a fit

  • Active tan or recent sun
  • Melasma — needs careful assessment
  • Pregnant or nursing
  • Deeper skin tones — assessed individually

How it works

01

Pigment and vessels sit near the surface

Years of sun leave clusters of melanin and dilated vessels in the upper skin.

02

Light targets colour only

Filtered wavelengths are absorbed by the brown and red targets, heating them without damaging surrounding skin.

The skin clears

Treated spots darken then flake off within about five days; vessels collapse and redness settles.

What to expect

Step 1

Step 01

Consultation

Free. We confirm skin type, check for recent sun, and set expectations.

Step 2

Step 02

Treatment

Cool gel and eye shields. Pulses feel like a warm rubber-band snap. Twenty to thirty minutes.

Step 3

Step 03

Darkening

Spots go darker for three to five days — this is the treatment working, not a reaction.

Step 4

Step 04

Clearing

Pigment flakes away. Redness improves over two to three weeks.

Questions

Why do my spots look worse afterwards?

Because that is the treatment working. Pigment is drawn to the surface and darkens like coffee grounds before flaking off over three to five days. Do not pick at it.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe a warm rubber-band snap. It is brief and no numbing is usually required.

How many sessions will I need?

Two to four spaced three to four weeks apart for most concerns. Rosacea and redness usually need more sessions than brown spots.

Can I have it in summer?

Only if you have genuinely stayed out of the sun. Treating recently tanned skin risks burns and pigment problems, so we will reschedule rather than take the chance.

Is BBL the same as IPL?

BBL is Sciton’s version of intense pulsed light, with tighter filtering and better cooling. The principle is the same; the control is better.
